Trash-in-the-Woods Cleanup Day

Sunday, May 15 – 11:00 am. Meet 1/4 mile up Tartar Gulch.

The Sasquatch Woods People originally got their start by organizing clean-up events to pick up trash that has been dumped in the woods. There is currently a ton of trash (well, many tons, probably) that needs to get picked up in the hills above the Holland Store, mainly in the Tartar Gulch and Althouse Creek areas. SWP has a grant to provide funding for vehicle removal, supplies and disposal fees, but we need all the volunteers we can get to help pick up all the junk!

Yes, we know the trash is such a tiny problem compared to the clearcuts. But when they are clearcutting and spraying the hillsides in all directions, and you can’t make them stop (yet), it is deeply therapeutic to take action in one little place and make it better. Every time we clean up a trash spot and set it back to it’s beautiful, natural condition, we can take one deep breath and keep moving forward. It is so worth it!

It will be a BIG day, with a 30-yard dumpster that we will probably fill completely. Please join us! It is especially useful if you can bring a pickup truck and/or trailer for taking trash loads to the dumpster. Contact us if you have questions, or just come on by on the 15th, on Tartar Gulch.

Directions: From Cave Junction, take the Caves Highway about 2 miles east. Turn right on the first Holland Loop. Just past mile marker 5, take a right on Kendall (at the Holland Store). Go about a half mile on Kendall, and then at the ‘Y’ keep to the left onto Althouse Creek Road. Go one mile on Althouse, then take a sharp left right onto a steep uphill, on Tartar Gulch. The first cleanup area will be on the left, about 1/4 mile up Tartar Gulch. If you can’t find us, call (541) 294-0260 for directions!

We have lots of trash bags, and rubber gloves to go around. We recommend you wear sturdy shoes, and bring water and maybe a snack. There are quite a few dumpsites that we know of, so we hope to clean up as much as we can in one day!
